The Health Passport Survey

In Buckinghamshire, people with a learning disability have been using Health Passports since 2005.

Talkback and Buckinghamshire Learning Disability Services wanted to make sure that the Health Passport was working well for the people using it, so we undertook a survey to find out more.

We asked people with a learning disability, their carers, staff from learning disability services and healthcare professionals what they thought about Health Passports.

We found out that Health Passports are seen as:

  • a good idea
  • an informative tool that makes information easy to understand
  • useful when going into hospital or in an emergency
  • good for helping to communicate with health professionals
  • providing a reliable picture of individuals health needs
  • acting as a memory aid
  • used beyond Buckinghamshire borders and also taken on holidays

We also  discovered that some of the pages of the Health Passport needed revising and that important information could be added.

Some people told us that they  would like to see another type of Health Passport made for people who are able to read and understand information more easily.

We learnt that generally people with a learning disability require some form of support in the use and maintenance of their Health Passports.

We also found out that the profile of Health Passports and their use by people with a learning disability needs to be raised again and sustained.

We completed a full written report of this survey and its findings. We also made a shorter version.

The Health Passport Survey Report can be downloaded as a file to view.
